Hygge, the secret to happiness

Did you ever ask yourself what happiness is? Yes, today we’re feeling meta-philosophical at #weareknitters. True happiness resides in little things, or actions, that we already do without really giving them much thought.

The Danish, the happiest people in the world, who have been practicing true happiness for more than 200 years, coined this phenomenon as Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah).

So…what is Hygge exactly? It’s the little joys in life, like watching your favorite show on Netflix on a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon drinking hot chocolate, wrapped up in a soft, cozy blanket knitted with our Pima cotton yarn in a cool and unique color next to the fireplace. Aside from just enjoying our moment of happiness we could take some great pictures for Instagram too.

It’s no wonder that Hygge, or the secret to happiness, originated in a Nordic country like Denmark, there is not much to choose from during their long winter months: either stay home wearing a sweater knitted from baby alpaca, or bundle up under twenty layers and get out in the snow with their skis on.

If you want to add a bit of Hygge philosophy to your life, buy some candles, they’ll add a touch of light and atmosphere to your home; create a little corner where cell phones are forbidden, a little nook to read, or knit a fabulous, cuddly sweater with our petite Peruvian yarn. Prepare your favorite sweet treat, and escape to your Hygge place!
