Hello!

I’m Meredith, and in case you haven’t heard yet, I am the one running and finger- knitting the NYC Marathon. The race is 10 weeks away, and each week I will be updating in this NYC Marathon Diary my training: the ups and downs of getting ready for the big day!

You might be thinking, “Knitting a marathon? Is she for real?” Yes, it’s real and it’s happening, and you can help WAK get to the finish line in fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by donating here.

This week, it was HOT. Running in the summer is hard enough with the heat and sunny days, but add a yarn ball and it’s a whole different story. You think you get sweaty? You should see me after running 13 miles (20.9 kilometers) while knitting with wool! It’s not a pretty picture…

The more I run, the more I knit, and so I start to wrap my knit piece around my arm so it doesn’t drag on the ground. Picture someone wearing a big sweater in the middle of summer while running, and that is pretty much what I look (and feel!) like.

This week, I was on vacation with my family, so I was able to run with my dad. We went running early in the morning to try and beat the heat, but it was already 80 (27C) degrees. The thing about running with my dad is, he is a lot faster than me. “Wait for me, dad, I’m knitting back here!” I was trying to keep up with him, but that is easier said than done when you have a big yarn ball with you and it is getting hotter by the minute!

I am still getting used to running with the wool, but it is slowly becoming my best friend, and I am sure in the cold fall, I will appreciate having the extra warmth with me on chilly days! I never thought I would be looking forward to colder weather, until I started training to knit a marathon!

Check back next week to see my progress in the journey to the NYC Marathon, and stay cool!
