How to Knit German Herringbone Stitch

We love to knit German Herringbone stitch!

There are tons of different variations of this classic stitch, so you can choose the one that works best for your pattern, it’s really versatile.

A while back we showed you how to knit German Herringbone stitch and today we’re going to show you one of the variations that we can use to knit a sweater or a scarf.

You already know that by using different weights of yarn you’ll get very different results, so try experimenting with WAK wools and have some fun.

To knit the German Herringbone stitch cast on multiples of 15 stitches + 2 extra stitches. This stitch is not reversible.

Row 1: purl 2, *make 1 (with the left hand needle pick up the strand between the two stitches from front to back, then knit it through the back loop), knit 3, purl 2, purl 3 together, purl 2, knit 3, make 1, purl 2*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 2: *knit 2, purl 4, knit 5, purl 4*. Repeat from * to * until there are 2 stitches left, knit 2.

Row 3: purl 2, *make 1, knit 4, purl 1, purl 3 together, purl 1, knit 4, make 1, purl 2*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 4: *knit 2, purl 5, knit 3, purl 5*. Repeat from * to * until there are 2 stitches left, knit 2.

Row 5: purl 2, *make 1, knit 5, purl 3 together, knit 5, make 1, purl 2*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 6: *knit 2, purl 6, knit 1, purl 6*. Repeat from * to * until there are 2 stitches left, knit 2.

Repeat rows 1 to 6 until you reach the desired length.
