Hi knitters!

When you begin the adventure of learning how to knit, we know how complicated it is to distinguish between increases and decreases; there are many types of increases and many variations of decreases as well… so to help you, we are going to show you how to knit decreases in order to make sleeves, hats, socks, etc…

First, we are going to show you how to decrease one stitch on each side in two different ways:

the simple decrease and knitting two stitches together.

In the following post we will show you how to decrease two stitches in the center of your project, with the center double decrease and the s1, k2tog, psso decrease.

Simple decrease of one stitch on each side

We decrease by one stitch on each side of the odd rows in this way:

1. To decrease on the right side, we slip the first stitch on our left needle to our right WAK needle.

2. We knit the second stitch normally, according to the type of stitch that we chose for our garment.

3. We lift the first stitch (the one that we slipped) over the second stitch. The stitch will move towards the left. We are decreasing on the right side.

As you can see in the photo, the left side is different. This is because we decrease on the left side when there are three stitches remaining rather than at the end of the row – repeating the same steps as the right side… 😉

Decrease by knitting two stitches together

For this type of decrease, we decrease one stitch by knitting two stitches together at the ends of the odd rows:

1. We are going to pass the last two stitches of each side from the left needle to the right WAK needle.

2. Knit the two stitches together, according to the type of stitch that we chose for our WAK garment. The second stitch always stays on top of the first.

Now you have learned different ways to make decreases… we are looking forward to seeing your advances and WAK creations on Instagram. 😉
