The moss stitch forms an essential part of the life of every knitter, and now also of everyone who loves to crochet!

Crocheting this stitch with a crochet hook and wool is really easy and once you got the hang of it you’ll never forget it.

How to crochet moss stitch

The stitch is reversible. You can crochet it with basically any even number of chains.

Row 1: start with the fourth chain on your crochet hook, crochet a single crochet, *crochet a chain, skip the next stitch, crochet a single crochet*, repeat from * to * until you have completed the row. Flip the project.

Row 2: crochet 2 chains, crochet a single crochet in the free space left by the chain of the previous row,  *crochet a chain, crochet a single crochet in the free space left by the chain of the previous row*, repeat from * to * until you have completed the row, finishing with a single crochet in the free space formed by the 3 chains at the beginning of the previous row. Flip the project.

Row 3: crochet 2 chains, crochet a single crochet in the free space left by the chain of the previous row,  *crochet a chain, crochet a single crochet in the free space left by the chain of the previous row*, repeat from * to * until you have completed the row, finishing with a single crochet in the free space formed by the 2 chains at the beginning of the previous row. Flip the project.

Repeat the 3 rows until you have reached the desired length.

See, it really couldn’t be any easier! This stitch is also known as grain stitch and it has a rather spongy texture, ideal, for example, for a warm two-row neck of a sweater.
