Hi knitters!
Today we are teaching you a very useful trick for adapting patterns to different types of wool or cotton.
Without a problem! You just have to calculate the gauge and from that point, you will be able to adapt the measurements, stitches, and rows to your material.
We’re leaving you an example here so that you won’t have a problem modifying the WE ARE KNITTERS garment that you like the most, whether it is in chunky wool, petite wool or cotton… with a simple rule of three!
As you know, in all of our patterns, we calculate the gauge of the garment based on the wool used, the stitch or the tension applied when knitting, taking into account the 10 cm x 10 cm stitch sample.
1- The first thing you need to know is the measurements of the garment when knitted with the original pattern, as well as its gauge (the sample that appears in the patterns).
2- Knowing these measurements, you just have to solve for X in the following equation:
# of stitches in the gauge of the new garment to adapt——– 10 cm
X—————————–
The result will be the number of stitches you have to cast on in order to begin knitting your modified pattern.
Do the same with the rows:
# of rows in the gauge to adapt —————– 10 cm
X ———
This will be the number of rows that you will have to knit in your adapted pattern.
You already know that the gauge depends on the stitch used, but the rule of three for calculating gauge is always the same.
To help yourself out, you can knit a 10 cm sample with the material that you would like to use for your adapted pattern.
